After all the sun and beaches of Sardinia we headed up to Switzerland to check out the Matterhorn. We based ourselves in Zermatt and prayed for good weather for the following day when we planned to take the cog-rail up to Gonergrat. Gonergrat is a look out point up amongst the alps with fantastic views of the Matterhorn and massive glacier fields surrounding it, as well as views of countless mountain peaks in every direction. We were blessed with perfect blue skies and made our way up to the lookout via the cog-rail that went up the mountainside. When we reached the top we were stunned with the sheer size of the Matterhorn, and the glaciers were massive also. Words won't really do it justice, so i'll let the photos speak for themselves (when we can get them up!). One last bit of info regarding Switzerland, it is as expensive as everyone says it is, even more so to be honest!!! For examle I became very excited when we spied a Thai restaurant in Zermatt, thinking we could get our thai hit for the first time in months. However a single main dish equated to NZ $40 so we passed on that idea and settled for a little cheap pub instead. But it really is worth visiting - it's all about the cow bells, beautiful chocolate, swiss cheese or chocolate fondues, tiny alpine villages holding on to the steep mountainside, friendly locals and amazing views. It was definately a favourite on our trip so far....
