Jungfraujoch, "The Top Of Europe", Switzerland

After Zermatt we decided to head to Interlaken for the night, which initially proved to be harder than we anticipated as all the mountain passes were closed. We called our hostel and they directed us to a small town at the base of the mountains where you can drive up and directly on to flat bed carriages of an open train. This train then hurtles directly through a tunnel through the mountain in pitch black darkness, with us rattling around in our car reminiscent of the scary boat/tunnel scene in the original Willy Wonka movie. Ten minutes later you are on the right side of the mountain range....
We made an early start the next morning, drove to Grindelwald, and got the Jungfraubahn up towards the highest railwaystation in europe. The station sits in amongst three massive peaks - the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau, and lies right in the saddle between the Monch and Jungfrau summits. The train journey itself tunnels up directly through the Eiger and Monch mountains and pauses at two spots where they have blasted windows through the rock face to give stunning views out over the surrounding region.
At the Jungfraujoch station they have quite a large complex, with ice caves and ice sculptures, a couple of restaurants and a big viewing station with plateaus to walk out on to the snow. The surrounding glaciers covered in snow look like a snow kiters paradise, with big open sloping plains with a layer of fresh powder on top.
It was well worth the ridiculous price it cost us to get up there..... :)
